Giving Day 2022

Inspire a Brighter Future for students facing food insecurity

On November 29, 2022, Bow Valley College is taking part in Giving Tuesday, a global generosity movement designed to support philanthropy and giving across sectors. Last year Bow Valley College raised more than $60,000 during our first-ever Giving Day thanks to the generosity of our College community. This year, we hope to raise $50,000 to support our students directly.

Many students in our College community are facing hardships and challenges, including food insecurity. Rising food costs and inflation are a concern across Canada and here at home. Last year, nearly 6 million people in Canada, including 1.4 million children, experienced food insecurity. We have seen this fall that our campus community is not immune. Many of our students are coming to class hungry and having to choose between paying their tuition and buying groceries.

Bow Valley College student and SABVC Internal Director Taiani Bressan has felt the struggle of food insecurity firsthand. “As a student, I can attest to the difficulty of concentrating in class without a healthy breakfast or writing an exam after skipping lunch. Without proper nourishment, students have more difficulty sleeping well, concentrating, attending classes, studying, and delivering assignments,” Taiani says.

Bow Valley College is proud to support our students with several initiatives across our campuses to help students address food insecurity. We have seen tremendous need this fall, and our programs need support now more than ever. In the first month of this school year, our Students’ Association exhausted its annual emergency support program budget to help students in need meet their day-to-day needs. This Giving Day, we are urging our community to support our students and give to the Food Insecurity Emergency Bursary fund. A donation of $50 could be all it takes to provide groceries to a student for a week and help ensure they can stay in school and complete their education.

This year, thanks to an anonymous donor, every gift we receive on Giving Day will be matched (up to $1000) to a maximum of $15,000. You can double your impact and support even more students to reach their dreams and change their lives.

We know that education is the greatest agent of social change, and this Giving Day, we are committed to ensuring that Bow Valley College students don’t have to go to class hungry. All gifts help us reach our goal. Please give today at https://bowvalleycollege.ca/about/give-to-bow-valley-college/givenow
