Program Description

The Perioperative Post-Diploma Certificate is designed to provide Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses the theoretical and technical knowledge required to provide safe competent care across all phases of the perioperative process. The program is offered in a blended format with theory courses delivered asynchronously online, while skills labs and clinical practicums are delivered in person. Laboratory components will be delivered once a week during the duration of the perioperative Nursing Skills lab which will be delivered over 8 weeks. Clinical practicums will occur over a duration of 8 weeks, which could be subject to change based on availability of practicum placements. Students should prepare for the possibility of daytime, evening, night, or weekend shifts for the duration of the clinical experience. Knowledge and experience gained through learning theory, skills labs, and work integrated learning provides the learner with the required knowledge and skills to work in a perioperative environment

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must be either actively registered in Canada as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Applicants must provide proof of College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) registration or College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) licensure.
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to have 1 year of recent acute care experience.

Perioperative nursing foundational knowledge will be examined in accordance with the professional legislation and practice of the specialization. Principles of perioperative communication and surgical documentation regarding patient safety and interprofessional communication will be explored. Perioperative nursing terminologies and concepts will be identified to provide the learner with foundational knowledge related to the safe care of the patient in the perioperative environment.

This course will provide the student with an understanding of the theoretical knowledge and skills required to care for the patient undergoing anesthesia. Pharmacology related to the patient's perioperative care will be examined along with patient safety considerations related to anesthesia and the perioperative patient. Monitoring and care of the patient undergoing anesthesia will be discussed along with management of perioperative complications and anesthesia-related emergencies.

Course will examine the care of the patient in the perioperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases. The learner will apply the nursing process to the perioperative setting. Students will explore the technical skills required for patients across the lifespan in the peri-operative setting. Principles of asepsis, sterilization, disinfection of surgical instruments, and infection prevention and control will be examined.

This course will provide the learner with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in the perioperative skills lab. Students will have the opportunity to practice psycho-motor skills in the simulated environment as it relates to safe competent care in the perioperative nursing environment.

In this practicum, learners will participate in work-integrated learning in a perioperative clinical setting, applying knowledge, providing perioperative nursing care, and integrating clinical judgment and problem-solving in various practical situations. Under the guidance of a qualified preceptor, they will have the opportunity to use evidence-informed practice to consolidate knowledge and perioperative nursing competencies to gain the necessary knowledge skills, and competence required to work effectively as a perioperative nurse.

Perioperative preceptorship placements may occur anywhere throughout Alberta including rural Alberta. It is the responsibility of the learner for all costs associated with transportation and accommodation as travel is an expectation of all work-integrated learning courses.

The Work Integrated Learning Team will send out information regarding the required clinical documentation for your preceptorship experience. This documentation will need to be submitted by the deadline.
