Program Description

This service-learning program for professional and skilled immigrants will provide opportunities for newcomers to make community connections and gain experience in Canadian workplaces, all while improving language and intercultural communication. The program is 15-weeks long and includes 20 hours of classwork weekly, five hours of self-directed work (such as personal reflection) outside of class weekly, and five hours of service-learning weekly throughout the program.

In this program you will: 

  • Enhance your critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills in real world contexts.
  • Develop intercultural and field specific communication skills to interact with others more effectively.
  • Complete a service-learning placement that will give you experience in a field of interest that utilizes your skillset, values and lived experience.
  • Develop your research skills to identify community issues and create sustainable community change through project-based learning.
  • Build an effective resume and develop your interview skills.
  • Improve language skills relevant to your specific field of interest.
 

Funding

This program is fully funded by the Government of Alberta. Tuition, textbooks, and other materials will be fully funded by the Government of Alberta through Alberta Settlement and Integration Program (ASIP).

 

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels: 5, 5, 5,5
  • Be a permanent resident, Convention refugee, or naturalized Canadian citizen
  • Not funded by other Government programs
