The College Expands Education Opportunities In Tanzania Through Training
From 2015 to 2019, Bow Valley College participated in an international development project called the Improving Skills Training for Employment Program (ISTEP) in Tanzania. About one third of Tanzania’s population lives below the poverty line. The tourism and extractive sectors present opportunities for more prosperity. However, skills training to find or create employment in these sectors is limited. The reason being is most teachers working in technical or vocational education lack teacher training. ISTEP is helping technical and vocational training institutions deliver improved skills training. ISTEP is run by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) and funded by Global Affairs Canada.
Through ISTEP, Bow Valley College and its partners — the Morogoro Vocational Teachers Training College and the Open University of Tanzania — have developed a teacher-training program for competency-based training in Tanzania. The program is a post-graduate diploma in teacher education, and it is the first of its kind in East Africa.
The College played a number of roles in ISTEP. For example, the team designed four modules in curriculum development, gender equality, open and distance learning, and entrepreneurship. The College also trained approximately 30 master trainers, who will be teaching the post-graduate diploma program. The diploma will be delivered in a blended format with in-classroom training and through open and distance learning using a tool called Moodle.
The post-graduate diploma is now accepting applications.
