Fall Convocation 2023

"Crossing the stage to the next phase of your life"

It was the most wonderful time of the year at Bow Valley College: Convocation! On December 7, 2023, an enthusiastic group -- about 430 out of the nearly 850 Bow Valley College graduates from the spring and summer term -- crossed the stage at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, and into the next stage of their lives.

At the morning ceremony celebrating graduates of the School of Community Studies and School of Health and Wellness, long-time Bow Valley College supporter, student advocate, and Calgary business icon, Ross Glen, the founder of RGO Products, was recognized with an honorary diploma.

His daughter, Cathy Orr, herself a former member of the college’s board of governors, urged graduates on behalf of her father to “work hard, never give up, stay curious and open-minded, and get involved in the community.”

Valedictorian Christina Stafford, a Child and Youth Care Diploma graduate who faced addiction and homelessness as a young person, spoke not only about the significance of the day but also about the importance of the journey.

“For me, this program was a lifeline, an opportunity to heal the wounds of my past and utilize my experiences to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. I know many of you have overcome your own challenges to reach this point. And here we are, graduating!”

During the afternoon ceremony for the graduates of the Centre for Entertainment Arts, Chiu School of Business, and School of Technology, valedictorian Agustina Antelo expressed the value of being one’s self.

“During my time at Bow Valley College, I was made to feel valuable for the colour palette that I bring. I have learned that our individuality and vulnerability are our greatest strengths because no one can bring the same colours as you. What will make us stand out and succeed as we step into the next chapter of our lives is our character – our true colours.”

Though it was a joy-filled celebration, President and CEO, Misheck Mwaba also reflected on the challenges of our times, and how graduates can lean on the values of respect, resilience, and creativity to face them.

“While the world may seem like a stressful place to journey into today, you are not alone,” he shared. “Look around you at your fellow graduates. You all have this tool kit and can support each other.”

As Bow Valley College sends this group of 2023 graduates into the world, President Mwaba reminded them that they are ready. “Obstacles do not block the path; they are the path,” he implored. “I know your learning journey won’t stop here with this achievement.”
