Fund Helps Learners Overcome Challenges Of The Pandemic
When the COVID-19 crisis reached Calgary in March, Ginny Wong and her family experienced many of the repercussions first-hand.
Ginny lost childcare because her daycare facility closed, and her husband lost his job. She initially found the transition to online learning challenging, as she describes herself as a person who loves face-to-face interactions and actively participates in lectures and labs.
“On top of that I have a toddler and a preschooler, who don't fully understand, if at all, why they can no longer see their friends and play in the playground,” she said.
But the Practical Nurse Diploma student reached out to Bow Valley College for support and had helpful appointments with counsellors in Learner Success Services to talk about the challenging situation.
She has also benefitted from getting back into living room yoga and taking her kids out for walks. Thankfully, her husband also found a new job after searching for a couple of weeks.
Ginny said her nursing instructors are “extremely helpful, friendly and approachable, and of course knowledgeable.”
After completing her studies, she hopes to find work as a Licensed Practical Nurse and begin her new career.
