Bow Valley College to offer Early Learning and Childcare Certificate in Cochrane

Cochrane - Bow Valley College (BVC) will be offering its Early Childhood Education Certificate (ELCC) program in Cochrane this fall.  Classes will run from September 2, 2014 to April 21, 2015.

The eight month program prepares graduates to provide quality child care in a wide variety of settings and to plan appropriate activities for children in their care. The program combines theory and practice, and graduates are eligible for Child Development Worker Certification from Alberta Human Services (formerly referred to as Level 2). Classes will run on Mondays, Thursdays, and half-days on Friday, and students will have the opportunity to participate in a local practicum. Classes will take place at the Cochrane Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) meeting rooms in the HomeStead Apartment building.

A recent report released by the Let's Touch the Skies project, which is exploring issue linked to women's economic security in Cochrane, found that the community is experiencing a shortage of certified childcare workers. "Bringing the ELCC program to Cochrane is a great example of BVC's efforts to meet the educational needs of communities within its stewardship region," says Shauna Cox, the BVC Regional Lead for Cochrane. FCSS Manager Susan Flowers says that because Cochrane is growing quickly it is important for the community's social infrastructure to keep pace. "We are thrilled to partner with BVC to bring this training to Cochrane. This will strengthen supports for childcare and families, while benefitting the whole community."
