Thinking about studying in Canada?
Bow Valley College is located in the heart of downtown Calgary, one of the biggest cities in Canada.  Located at the foot of the Canadian Rockies and just one hour away from the world-famous Banff National Park and Lake Louise, you can finish your classes at 5 and be in the mountains by 6.  Named the third most livable city in the world in 2023, Calgary is also Canada’s sunniest city and the cleanest city in the world.  With almost a quarter of Calgary’s population being foreign-born, you’ll feel at home in this cosmopolitan and diverse city.

Join us for orientation! Start off on the right foot at Bow Valley College by getting to know other international students! New Student Orientation (NSO) are mandatory.  The NSO will cover issues that are specific to international students including post-graduate work permits, academic breaks, working as an international student, and international student advising.

I recently graduated as an international student in Canada.  Can I apply for permanent residence?

You may apply for permanent residency if you meet the requirements for Canada’s immigration programs.  Please click here for further details.  In addition, review the requirements to immigrate to the province of Alberta here.

Am I considered an international student for Bow Valley College registration purposes?

At Bow Valley College international students are those who are not Canadian Citizens, Landed Immigrants, Refugees or Permanent Residents of Canada. Anyone who has a study, work or visitor permit would hold an international student status for the purpose of enrolment at Bow Valley College.

I am still completing the courses that I need in order to meet the Admission Requirements for a career program.  Can I still apply?

Yes, Bow Valley College's admission process is first-applied, first-qualified, so the date of application is considered.

The Admissions Officer will request to see proof of enrolment in required courses, including the course completion dates.

Final grades that meet the entrance requirements must be submitted by the deadline outlined in the conditional acceptance letter to confirm acceptance into the program.

Can international students take high school upgrading?

Yes, international students are eligible to register in some of the high school upgrading options at Bow Valley College as long as it works with their immigration status in Canada.  Students who are overseas are eligible to take combined online high school upgrading option. Students who have a Canadian study permit and are in Canada can take traditional courses.

Can I get a conditional acceptance into one of Bow Valley College’s career programs if I am registered in the high school upgrading courses?

In most cases, when students are registered in one or more high school upgrading courses at Bow Valley College, admission officers for our programs will consider an applicant for conditional acceptance.  This is not a guarantee and applicants should speak with the International Education team about their education pathway goals before registering in high school upgrading courses about this possibility.  A separate application and application fee is required for each application to a program.

Do I have to pay an extra fee for textbooks?

Cost of workbooks is not included.  Workbooks and textbooks are available for purchase through our bookstore.

I am an international student right now but I have applied for my Canadian Permanent Residence.  What is my status?

International students on a study permit who become permanent residents, convention refugees, or protected persons of Canada may be eligible to pay domestic tuition if they provide the necessary documents (proof of permanent residency/notice of decision) before the first day of classes.

What if I change my status to permanent resident/convention refugee or protect persons?

International students on a study permit who become permanent residents, convention refugees, or protected persons of Canada may be eligible to pay domestic tuition if they provide the necessary documents (proof of permanent residency/notice of decision) before the first day of classes.

What if I am a refugee claimant?

Refugee claimants are not eligible to pay domestic tuition fees.  Also, refugee claimants will be required to hold a study permit to study. Refugee claimants cannot take advantage of the exemption from Study Permit Exemption-short term study.  Refugee claimants with existing temporary resident status may attend a short-term course of study as long as they complete the course within the period of their authorized stay.

Can my children attend school in Canada, and are they subject to international fees?

If you are an international study who is traveling with children to Canada, it is important to understand the different factors involved with enrolling your children into school.  Please read these sections on the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada website to learn more:

Is there a cost to enroll my children into school?  You will be charged general school fees if you (the parent) have a valid study permit and if you are registered in:

  • a full-time provincially recognized diploma program or full-time degree program of study that is a minimum of 2 years duration; or
  • a full-time graduate or post-doctoral program of study that is a minimum of one year in duration.

If you do not meet the above requirements, you may also be required to pay international tuition for your child, even if your child is enrolled in a public school.  Please confirm your options with the specific school board you are interested in registering with.

How do I register my children into school? The registration process for each type of school will be slightly different.  Refer to the websites for detailed information.
