Preparing for College

College is an exciting step toward your future, but it’s also a big decision that requires planning.

To make the most of this journey, it helps to start early and focus on both your academic and personal readiness. At Bow Valley College, we’re here to help you succeed by providing the resources, guidance, and support you need to transition smoothly into college life. Whether you're just beginning your academic journey or looking to upgrade your skills, we offer programs and services that ensure you’re fully prepared for your college experience.

When should you start preparing for college?

The best time to start is now. Whether you’re in Grade 9, 10, or 12, you can take small steps to prepare for college and make the most of your time in high school.

Focus on improving your grades. Taking challenging courses, such as honors or AP classes, in a rigorous curriculum demonstrates to colleges that you’re prepared for advanced learning.

Find your flow. Follow your passion.

Think about the life you want to create. What kind of work excites you?

Choosing a program or career starts with understanding yourself. Reflect on the activities that energize and inspire you—the ones that put you in a ‘flow state’ and make you lose track of time because you're so absorbed in the moment. These experiences often reveal your natural talents or deepest passions.

Ace your studies

College requires a fresh approach to studying. Ditch the cramming, and spread your study sessions throughout the semester. Form a study group, take breaks, and actively engage with the material—whether it’s creating study guides or teaching it to a friend. Find a distraction-free study spot, set study goals, and reward yourself when you hit them!

Prepare for tests

Whether it's the SAT or ACT, prep early! Take practice tests, enhance your vocabulary, and work on your essay skills. A strong test score can give you an edge in the admissions process.

Plan Your Finances

College costs add up—tuition, books, food. Start planning now by looking into scholarships and financial aid. Get familiar with budgeting and consider a part-time job to save money and gain experience.

Getting guidance when you need it.

Your school counselors, teachers, and family are valuable resources. They can help you explore options, guide you through the application process, and offer support when you're feeling uncertain.

Ready to start? The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel when college kicks off!
It can seem like college is a long time away, but you’d be surprised at how quickly time can pass! Preparing early can help the transition from high school to college a bit easier to navigate.
