Bow Valley College Hosts First Annual Research and Innovation Symposium
CALGARY, AB – As part of its commitment to fostering stronger connections with communities through social innovation research, Bow Valley College is hosting its first two-day Social Innovation Research symposium on Friday, October 26, and Saturday, October 27, 2018.
Social Innovation Research in Alberta: Reports from the Field will bring together innovators and researchers to share insights on social innovation research and its role in fostering social change. Attendees will hear from local and national guest speakers and focus on getting from thought to action to tackle some of the region’s most pressing issues.
“Our first symposium on social innovation demonstrates Bow Valley College’s continued commitment to applied research,” says Dr. Russ Wilde, Dean, Research and Innovation. “We’re excited about what the future holds as we expand our research efforts in new directions and help shape a society that is safe, just, and prosperous.”
Ken Steele, co-founder of Academica Group, will open the conference and provide an overview of social and demographic trends and explore opportunities and challenges facing higher education. Jesse Brown, a startup entrepreneur and news journalist, will conclude the conference by sharing the inside scoop on where digital culture is headed and on the importance of applied research in a world in transition.
The symposium offers seven break-out sessions exploring timely topics ranging from the development of a dementia-knowledge and care-communication toolkit for health care providers, to co-creating learning materials for caregivers of Indigenous children. These sessions are led by recipients of recent funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada.
