Literacy for a New Economy

The overall objective of the project was to strengthen the Workplace Essential Skills required for Guyanese youths to become empowered, through employment and through effective functioning in their workplaces, communities and families. The project aimed to strengthen and support the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) of the University of Guyana

Description of Actual Services Provided:

  • Technical assistance i in the design and implementation of project management practices, communication skills, and strategic planning.
  • Technical assistance in the design of a questionnaire to be used in conducting a workplace essential skills need assessment survey.
  • Increase the training capacity of the IDCE at the University of Guyana.
  • Tha analysis and adoption of international best practices at partner institutions.
  • The Canadian partners provided professional development training workshops for 25 Guyanese teachers.

Description of Results Achieved:

  • Provided Guyanese teachers, tutors and volunteers with more effective teaching tools, materials and skills, ultimately leading to employability or self-employment of Guyanese youths.
  • Built the capacity of the Guyanese partner to effectively deliver programs in all 10 regions of Guyana. This was achieved through the support of the university, government, local businesses, and community groups.
  • Increased IDCE's understanding of gender, environmental and employability/entrepreneurial issues and opportunities, for inclusion into other programming areas.
  • Fostered sustainability of educational growth amongst Guyanese youths through the four-year tenure of the program.
  • Through the provision of greater employability, self-employment and job training, the development of the private sector in Guyana was promoted.
