Learn to Earn Tourism Training

Bow Valley College assisted the Community Skills Development Foundation (COSDEF) in establishing a Centre of Excellence that produces skilled and semi-skilled community workers for environmentally sustainable (self) employment in tourism-related occupations. This increased the revenue generating opportunities in Namibia for unemployed youth (15-35) and women through improved community-based technical, entrepreneurial and essential skills training leading to sustainable small and medium-sized enterprise development.

Description of Actual Services Provided:

- COSDEF trainers deliver demand-driven tourism-related training to marginalized community learners using the Linkage Model

- COSDEF trainers deliver customized short courses aimed at the identified needs of employers, low skills employed workers and conservancy personnel

- COSDEF supports new and existing SME tourism-related operators in the informal sector, especially women

- COSDEF assesses, recognizes and tracks learner competencies in tourism-related skills areas

- Development of an environmental project to be incorporated into all training programs

Description of Results Achieved:

- COSDEF Centre of Excellence developed a national model of best practices for community-based tourism-related training

- Marginalized community members are gainfully employed in tourism-related sectors

- Community members, especially women, pursue sustainable self-employment in tourism-related sectors

- Low-skilled workers in the tourism industry improve their skill levels

- Community members are aware of the need for environmentally sustainable tourism

- Extreme poverty is reduced through (self) employment in the tourism-related sector

- The project worked towards improving the quality of services in the tourism industry

- Sustainable development is practiced at the community level
