Tech Skills Initiative

Are you unemployed? Convert your skill-set and join Calgary’s tech talent pool with our no-cost Information and Communication Technology training and work placement initiative. 

Structure

This comprehensive 26-week (6.5 month) initiative combines 16 weeks (4 months) of full time classroom training with 10 weeks (2.5 months) of work placement.

Monday, February 24, 2020
Monday, June 15, 2020 
Monday, October 5, 2020 

Training Topics

You will be required to identify your area of interest when completing the application form; please indicate in the application narrative which one of the training topics you are interested in and why you are choosing to pursue a career in this area. Potential topics that lead to industry-recognized certifications and credentials could include:

  • Business analytics
  • Computer programming
  • Database administration
  • Network security
  • Virtual machine software

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for the training program if you meet all of the following criteria:
  • You are unemployed or underemployed (working less than 20 hours per week)
  • You have Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident status 
  • You are EI eligible *

    * EI eligibility is determined by meeting one of the following criteria:
    - You are collecting active regular EI benefits OR
    - You have recently been laid off and will qualify to receive EI benefits OR
    - You have had an EI benefit period that ended within the previous 5 years OR
    - You have paid sufficient employee premiums to the EI Account in at least 5 of the previous 10 calendar years

Application Process

1.  Complete an online application form and upload your resume
2.  Complete a phone screening and an intake interview
3.  Complete three formal skills assessments: workplace essential skills testing (TOWES), Microsoft Office testing (Word and Excel), and IT aptitude testing 

There are a limited amount of program seats available. Only those who demonstrate that they are the best fit will be selected for an interview.

The February 24, 2020, intake is full and in progress. Applications for the June 15, 2020, intake will next be considered starting April 6, 2020. The last day to apply for June consideration is May 29, 2020. Thank you for your interest.
