Recreation Therapy Aide Certificate - Frequently Asked Questions

Program Overview

Q: Who can register in the Recreation program? The Recreation Therapy Aide certificate program is designed for Health Care Aides looking to expand their skill sets into the area of recreational therapy.

Q: How is the program structured? Course are delivered via a blended delivery model that includes online learning, on-campus workshops and a practicum. This program is designed to be taken while you work, with on-campus workshops scheduled on evenings and weekends.

Q: What is the schedule like? Workshops are held approximately two times every month. In the past they have been scheduled on Tuesday evenings from 5pm-9pm and occasionally held on Saturdays.

Q: How long does the program take to complete? 20 weeks. The program includes 4 months of online learning & workshops followed by 4 weeks of full-time practicum (5 months in total).

Q: How much will textbooks cost? Book lists and costs can be found on the Bookstore webpages.


Q: Is this certificate recognized by employers? Yes. Bow Valley College is the only school in Alberta to offer this certificate. There is also a 2-year diploma available from Lethbridge. Note: Candidates do not necessarily need a certificate to be hired as RTA's, but there is a move in this direction by the government.
