Course Description
Fundamentals of Real Estate is the first course required in becoming a licensed real estate professional in Alberta. The course provides the foundational knowledge and competencies a successful real estate practitioner must know and prepares learners for the Real Estate Licensing exam.
An overview of real estate along with the related Real Estate Act, Rules, Regulations, and applicable contract and real property laws are explored. Learners delve into the concepts of ethics, professionalism, and risk reduction, as well as the multi-facets of consumer relationships. Further topics of mortgage financing and fraud awareness, property valuation, real estate brokerages and condominiums are discussed providing a solid foundational knowledge for the real estate practitioner.
Real Estate Licensing Eligibility:
Learners wanting to become licensed in real estate in Alberta, must first meet the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) eligibility requirements and create a myRECA account. Visit the RECA's Getting Licensed information page for more details.
- First create a RECA Account here and obtain RECA CON ID.
- Enroll with Bow Valley College in the courses you would like to take.
- Check your email for confirmation and information on how to access your course.
Learners must meet the RECA Eligibility requirements if they wish to use this course for licensing purposes. Learners will need to successfully complete a RECA examination to become licensed.
For students not interested in becoming a real estate licensee:
If you want to take the real estate courses for general interest and do not intend to become a licensee, you do not need to register with RECA. However, we will require you to sign a declaration letter.
Course Features:
- Pre-requisites: None
- Course Delivery: Self-paced online study with access to support from industry experts.
- Course Schedule: Six months to complete the course. A recommended 15-week course is provided in the course outline.
- Course length: 80-110 hours based on learners' existing knowledge, experience in the industry, and active engagement with learner supports.
- Course fees: $650
- Completion Requirements: A minimum of 70% is required to pass the course.
- Language of instruction: English
- Accreditation: Officially recognized by RECA as an approved course
- Validity: 3 months to write RECA’s pre-licensing exam upon completing this course
RECA Licensing Exam:
Learners must meet the RECA Eligibility requirements and successfully pass this course. Learners will need to successfully complete RECA examination to become licensed.

Windmill Microlending
Windmill Microlending can provide affordable loans of up to $15,000 to immigrants and refugees in Canada to pay for the licensing or training you need to get back to your field of work.
