Part-Time Language Skills Courses

Take a part-time ELL course for general English development or focus on improving specific skill areas. Courses are 8 weeks in length and are taught by experienced and qualified language instructors. They cover a wide variety of topics and are fee paying classes.

Courses: Integrated Skills

Basic ELL

This basic level course improves learners' ability to speak, read, and write in English.

In this course, learners will:

  • provide basic personal information in oral and written form
  • respond with short answers to everyday situations
  • follow short written instructions
  • fill out simple forms

Intermediate ELL

This intermediate level course improves learners' ability to speak, read, and write in English. Learners in this course should already have knowledge of basic grammar and be able to read basic English print.

In this course, learners will:

  • initiate and participate effectively in conversations
  • write one or two paragraphs about personal experiences or future plans
  • get information from print (short stories, newspapers, charts, schedules, etc.)
  • fill out application forms

Advanced ELL

This advanced-level course improves learners' ability to speak, read and write in English. Learners in this course should have some confidence in their English abilities but need overall review, practice and refining of existing skills.

In this course, learners will:

  • participate effectively in conversations using socially appropriate language
  • write 2-3 paragraphs including an introduction, body and conclusion
  • identify factual information and infer meaning from print and oral materials
  • enhance vocabulary and idiomatic comprehension and usage
  • identify and improve grammatical and pronunciation errors

Courses: Oral Communication Skills

Listening and Speaking

These courses are for English language learners wanting to improve their everyday speaking and listening skills. The courses have a strong focus on pronunciation, and are available at intermediate and high intermediate levels.

Speaking Professionally

In this advanced level ELL course, learners will focus on the following areas of language as they relate to the workplace:

  • presentations
  • meetings
  • networking
  • small talk
  • idioms
  • cultural differences

Course work includes text-based testing and an oral presentation.

Pronunciation - Intermediate To Advanced

This intermediate to advanced level pronunciation course introduces learners to strategies and techniques to improve their spoken English. Pronunciation is a computer-assisted course and is offered in two cycles.

There is no prerequisite for either cycle.

In Cycle A, learners will:

  • compare and contrast the production of vowel sounds
  • compare and contrast the production of consonant sounds

In Cycle B, learners will:

  • learn correct word and sentence stress;
  • practice intonation and rhythm patterns; and
  • focus on improving listening skills

Cycle A is not a requirement for Cycle B.

Courses: Exam Preparation

IELTS Preparation

This course prepares participants to take the academic format of the IELTS test. The academic format tests a person's ability to study in English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level and can be used to satisfy the English language proficiency requirements at many institutions.

In this course, learners will:

  • practice each component of the IELTS test - speaking, listening, academic reading and academic writing
  • practice completing test sections within the time restrictions set by IELTS
  • have the opportunity to receive feedback from a BVC instructor on performance as well as tips on how to improve their IELTS score

IELTS Preparation and Exam

This course prepares participants to take the academic version of the IELTS test. This course is offered at a discounted fee and includes the fee for one IELTS exam sitting at Bow Valley College.

IELTS Intensive

This course prepares participants to take the IELTS Academic format but has fewer practice hours than the IELTS Preparation course. This course is aimed at learners who want a brief introduction and review of the test or additional practice with each component of the test.

In this course, learners will:

  • practice each component of the IELTS test - speaking, listening, academic reading and academic writing
  • practice completing test sections within the time restrictions set by IELTS
  • have the opportunity to receive feedback from a BVC instructor on performance as well as tips on how to improve their IELTS score

Courses: Written Communication

Grammar and Writing

This intermediate level course improves learners' writing and grammar skills.

In this course learners will:

  • learn simple tenses, adjectives, spelling rules, and parts of speech
  • understand the basics of writing good sentences
  • develop awareness of paragraph forms
  • improve accuracy and fluency in writing
  • build writing vocabulary

Writing Professionally

Learners will improve their ability to write English confidently and appropriately in the workplace. This course is intended for advanced English language learners whose skills allow for employability, but who still feel that their language skills do not allow them to function to the best of their abilities at work. The course is intended to be intensive and fast-paced. In this course, learners will:

  • initiate and participate effectively in formal and informal written correspondence
  • write using correct grammar and syntax
  • write in a concise manner
  • write on a topic relative to field of employment

Reading and Writing

This intermediate level ELL course will develop and improve learners' writing and reading skills. In this course, learners will:

  • build on their vocabulary each lesson through interactive activities
  • discover strategies for better reading
  • understand the basics of writing good sentences
  • compose different types of paragraphs
  • keep a weekly journal

Academic Writing

This advanced level class aims to provide learners with the knowledge and tools to be effective academic writers. Learners taking this course will be challenged to produce strong paragraphs and/or essays. Feedback will be given to learners on strategies for improving their academic writing skills so that they may succeed when taking an academic writing test.

In this course, learners will:

  • learn to write on topic
  • practice organizing and linking ideas
  • learn to provide supporting details and examples
  • edit to ensure correct spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • develop and incorporate appropriate vocabulary usage in their writing

Courses: Vocabulary/Grammar

Grammar

Learners discover where they are making grammatical mistakes and apply the rules of grammar to communicate effectively. Courses are available at the intermediate and advanced levels. It is recommended learners complete the intermediate level before registering for the advanced level. There is an assessment during the first class.
