Assistive Technology Certificate

Assistive Technology Certificate

Assistive Technology Certificate

This certificate program will give you an introduction to the types of challenges students may face in school, and the types of technologies and strategies that can be used to assist students with disabilities. There are three courses required to earn the Certificate. These courses can be taken in any order and are only offered in-class at this time. Videoconference delivery may be available to other campuses.

Introduction to Working with Students with Disabilities

In this course, you will learn strategies for effectively working with students with disabilities. You will investigate some of the most common types of disabilities (learning disabilities, mobility disabilities, vision impairments, and hearing impairments) and the types of strategies you can use to effectively support these students. Issues related to working with students with disabilities (eg: privacy, legal right to accommodations, language) will also be discussed.

Using Assistive Technology in the Classroom

In this course, you will learn about Assistive Technology and how technology tools can be used to increase access for students with disabilities. You will have opportunities for hands-on experience with the technologies; learning how they work and how they can help students with disabilities. You will also learn strategies to effectively introduce these tools to your students and how to integrate them with standard classroom activities.

Introduction to Universal Design and Accessibility

In this course, you will learn about the principles of universal design and how they can increase access to learning for all students, including students with disabilities. Using the ideas of universal design, you will create learning activities and materials that are accessible and engaging. You will also learn ways to easily convert or change previously created resources so that they are accessible and usable by more students in the classroom.
