Bow Valley College spearheads 150 Startups initiative across Alberta

July 5, 2017

CALGARY - Bow Valley College is proud to announce it is leading an annual initiative designed to expand Alberta's entrepreneurial capacity, called 150 Startups.

The College has collaborated with founding partners, RBC Foundation, John Dobson Foundation and Hunter Family Foundation to spearhead the program, designed to help over 150 post-secondary students take their business ideas from concept to reality.

"Young people have the confidence, optimism and inspiration to achieve anything they set their minds to," says Jeff Boyd, Regional President, RBC Alberta and the Territories. "They simply need access to the capabilities and connections necessary for the future world of work and we are committed to helping them get there through support of programs just like this."

Sixteen students from across Alberta will be chosen as their institutions most promising first-time entrepreneurs to participate in this year's event. Those winners will have the privilege of participating in a summer Skill Development Program that will walk them through every step needed to create their first startups.

"These first-time Entrepreneurs then expand Alberta's entrepreneurial capacity by becoming role models, advisors, mentors, and angel investors," says Craig Elias, Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Bow Valley College.

At the end of the Skill Development Program, participants compete in regional and provincial pitch-offs for a cash prize of $30K, at Innovation Rodeo, an entrepreneurship and innovation event held during the Calgary Stampede.
