Events Management program benefits from award-winning advisor

September 16, 2011

Bow Valley College's Events Management students are learning from the best mentor and coach in the city according to Meeting Planners International's (MPI) Calgary chapter.

Liz van Ramele, BVC's Events Management Program Advisor, was named this year's recipient of the West Wind Award, which recognizes an individual's outstanding involvement in the Calgary chapter through mentoring, coaching, and sharing of expertise within his or her field.

"This industry has been part of my life for a very long time and to be recognized by my peers and the event community is extremely gratifying," says Liz.

Liz was hired to build BVC's Events Management curriculum in 2002 when it was a one-year certificate program. Since that time, the demand for event planners has increased – so much so that the College has developed its certificate into a diploma and began a part-time, online offering.

"Liz has been instrumental in making our Event Management program a success," says Elza Bruk, BVC's Dean of Business. "Her expertise and engagement with the practitioner community contribute to the currency and relevance of our curriculum."

"Her personal networks have facilitated the placement of students in prestigious and exciting event management companies in Calgary," says Elza.

Liz works directly with the instructors of the program and the event planning community to ensure the program's curriculum is progressive and relevant.

"I now work with seven to nine instructors who specialize in everything from design and décor to media relations, ensuring our students get a relevant and well-rounded learning experience," says Liz.

"We also draw upon the resources of the Calgary business community to provide additional resources, advice about curricula, and job placements for the four-week practicum that concludes the program."

Liz is no stranger to recognition from her colleagues in the event planning industry. She was also awarded a White Hat Award from the Calgary Convention and Visitors Bureau and the American Express Canadian Hospitality Industry Award.

"I love my job at the college and feel very fortunate that people believe in me and my abilities enough to allow me to design and grow this program," says Liz.
