Want to improve your English to go to university or advance your career? As Alberta’s leading English language learning provider, we can help. Our English for Academic Purposes program provides the skills you need to succeed at school and in the workplace.

What you'll learn

The English for Academic Purposes program consists of three interconnected courses which equip internationally educated learners with the strategies and skills needed for success in further post-secondary programs of study in Canada.

Transition to Academic English - TAE

Learning tasks introduce competencies required for success in college preparatory classrooms and the workplace.

For example:

  • Presentation skills in multiple formats
  • Study skills: organization, note-taking, and exam strategies
  • Writing, reading, listening and speaking enhancement with an academic focus
  • Computer and technology skills for researching, writing, and presenting
  • Using a Learner Management System (LMS) D2L

Academic English 1 - AE1

Language skills are developed while exploring relevant issues, themes, and projects. Learning tasks teach competencies required for success in college classrooms and the workplace.

For example:

  • Study skills: organization, note-taking, and exam strategies
  • Computer and technology skills for researching, writing, and presenting
  • Reading, interpreting, and understanding a variety of authentic texts
  • Writing skills: summarizing, outlining, and essay writing
  • Understanding lectures and taking notes
  • Speaking and listening strategies for giving effective presentations
  • Collaborative teamwork skills
  • Using D2L for online learning and communicating with instructor

Academic English 2 - AE2

You will develop skills required for success in academic college and university programs. These skills are refined while exploring a series of thought-provoking themes and completing in-depth reports, research projects, and presentations.

Areas of focus include:

  • Reading authentic and challenging texts with speed and accuracy
  • Listening to lectures and applying strategies to maximize comprehension
  • Contributing to group discussions on relevant topics
  • Delivering presentations with clarity and confidence
  • Researching and writing well-developed and organized essays and reports
  • Applying critical thinking skills and developing and defending ideas
  • Using D2L for online learning and communicating with instructor Completion of the Academic English 2 course with a B or higher satisfies the English Language Proficiency Requirement for most Bow Valley College and SAIT career programs.
