Practical Nurse Diploma

100% OF BOW VALLEY COLLEGE PRACTICAL NURSE GRADUATES ARE EMPLOYED IN HEALTH CARE!

Practical Nurse Diploma Program educates you to enter one of the most highly respected and in demand careers in health care today. If you enjoy a challenge and have a desire to work in a dynamic environment a professional career in Practical Nursing is for you.

Practical Nurses work in an inter-professional practice health team assisting clients to meet their physical, emotional and psychological needs. As a member of the health care team you will provide, daily living activities, administer medications, provide medical treatment, perform assessments and create a safe, comfortable environment for their clients.

At Bow Valley College the Practical Nurse Diploma Program can be completed in just 17 months. Upon successful completion of the program and the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE) you are eligible for licensure with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).

Instruction is provided in classroom and nursing skills laboratory
settings, plus clinical experience in a variety of care settings including
urban and rural hospitals, continuing care facilities, community and
other health related institutions.

NOTE 1: Every effort is made to accommodate students in clinical placementswithin the time frame of the program. Students may be required to complete clinical placements during evening and weekend hours and may also need to travel to alternative locations. In rare instances, the College may need to delay the date of completion until a clinical placement can be arranged.

Under no circumstances are students allowed to participate in clinical placements without submission of a current valid immunization
report, current CPR Health Care Provider Level certificate and a Current
Police Information check (PIC). The existence of a criminal record may
prevent clinical placement, program completion, professional licensure and
therefore, may affect employment opportunities.

Campus, the Practical Nurse Diploma Part-Time program and Semesters 2, 3, & 4 are offered at our Franklin Station Campus. Please visit our

Admission Requirements:

Refer to Admissions Procedures for Full-Time Programs on page 8 for further clarification.
• Minimum final mark of 60% in English 30-1 or 70% in English 30-2 or equivalent
• Credit in Math 20 Pure or a minimum final mark of 60% in Math 20 Applied or equivalent
• Minimum final mark of 60% in Biology 30 or a minimum final mark of 60% in Anatomy and Physiology (ANPH 150) at Bow Valley College or equivalent

Pre-Program Requirements

The criteria listed below must be completed prior to the first day of classes:

• A current valid immunization report
• Current Police Information Check (PIC)
• Current CPR Healthcare Provider Level Certificate

International Applicants or Applicants Educated Outside of Canada

English language proficiency can be demonstrated by any one of:

• Achievement of a TOEFL score of 557 – 560 on the paper-based
test, a score of 220 on the computer-based test, or a score of 83 on the internet-based test (iBT)
• Achieving an IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
score of 6.0
• Successful completion of the English for Academic Purposes 3 (EAP 3) program at Bow Valley College with a grade of B
• Math and Science proficiency can be demonstrated by:
• English transcripts showing equivalent level Math and Science completion

Additional Pre-Program requirements are same as above

Transferability

Graduates of this program may be accepted into:

• Athabasca University – Bachelor of Nursing Program 30 block credits

Health Education: Personal Health and Wellness

English Composition

This university transfer credit course provides a solid grounding in the processes writers use to communicate clearly. By analyzing a number of written materials you have the opportunity to develop reading and
writing skills.


Anatomy and Physiology

This course provides an introduction to the structure and function of the human body according to body systems.


Interpersonal Relationships and Communication Skills

This course teaches you to relate and communicate on a personal, social, and professional basis. Course activities
promote communication skills with children, adults, and persons with special communication needs.



Adult Health Assessment

Using knowledge of anatomy and physiology, you have the opportunity to learn how to complete a holistic adult health assessment. The course includes 40 hours of nursing practice lab. 


Nursing Science Lab I: Basics
  l ^top
Use nursing principles, critical thinking and problem solving techniques to provide safe, competent care for clients. This nursing lab course includes demonstrations, supervised practice, and evaluation.


Nursing Theory I: Basics   l ^top
This course introduces you to nursing and the concept of critical thinking. The nursing process and conceptual framework of the program are used for holistic nursing care.

Semester II

Pharmacology
   l ^top
Learn the principles and actions of medications, the rationale for medication use and expected results. This course emphasizes critical thinking and nursing principles to assess the need for, and response to medications.

Pathophysiology   l ^top
This course provides a body systems approach to common health care issues, focusing on physiological changes that occur with health issues. There is an introduction to microbiology emphasizing the relationship of micro-organisms to illness.



Nursing Theory II: Intermediate

You have the opportunity to use the principles underlying nursing actions, critical thinking, and health promotion to plan nursing care for clients with health issues.


Nursing Science Lab II: Intermediate
  l ^top
Learn to use assessment, nursing and critical thinking to develop the psychomotor skills to provide safe, competent care for clients with health care problems. This lab includes demonstrations, supervised practice, and evaluation. 


Clinical Experience: Continuing Care
  l ^top
This course introduces continuing care settings with opportunities to apply knowledge and assist clients with activities of daily living. Provide safe and knowledgeable care, medication administration, and health assessment.


Introduction to e-Portfolio

This course introduces you to e-portfolio philosophy and software. Create and maintain an e-portfolio that emphasizes your personal, educational, and career goals.
 

Semester III

Community Nursing
  l ^top
This course focuses on community health, adapting nursing roles and activities to the needs of the community. Levels of prevention, primary health care, and determinants of health are discussed.


Growth and Development
  l ^top
This course provides a comprehensive overview of human growth and development and typical behavioural responses through the life span. Emphasis is placed on the stages of development and their link to common events.


Nursing Theory III: Advanced

This course focuses on the skills required to care for a client with complex health care issues. You have the opportunity to plan the nursing care of medical/surgical clients.


Nursing Science Lab III: Advanced
  l ^top
Use assessment, nursing, and critical thinking to provide safe, competent care for clients with complex health problems. This lab includes demonstrations, supervised practice and evaluation of nursing practice.


Clinical Experience: Acute Care

Plan and provide basic nursing care in the fast-paced acute care setting. Added to this challenge is pre/post operative care.

Semester IV

Maternity Nursing

This course presents a family-centred introduction to the needs and nursing interventions for childbearing families. Community resources and client teaching are addressed.


Mental Health Nursing

This course introduces the assessment and treatment of clients with psychiatric and mental health issues. Apply nursing models and processes to the care of clients with psychosocial needs.


Pediatric Nursing

Sociology

This university transfer credit introductory course examines how individual lives are shaped by one’s place in society. Focus is on Canadian culture, diversity, social trends, and globalization. 


Transition to Graduate Nursing

This course addresses the role and responsibilities of the graduate Practical Nurse. The issues of professionalism, ethics, and legalities are emphasized.


PreGrad Practicum I: Community and Focus

This course facilitates the transition of working under the supervision of an
instructor to working with a mentoring
nurse or preceptor in a community or specialized setting.


PreGrad Practicum II: Comprehensive

This course facilitates the transition of working under the supervision of a mentoring nurse or preceptor to an independent practitioner through consolidation of nursing knowledge and practice.
