BVC Cares

Bow Valley College cares about Calgary and our local community. We invite staff, students, and alumni to volunteer at quarterly events and help support non-profit organizations with the manpower to achieve their goals.

LinkAges - Digital Connections
Help seniors in learning how to connect in the digital world

LinkAges - Canada 150 Celebrations
LinkAges is celebrating Canada's 150th birthday with a public event in the CORE Shopping Centre. The event will include performances, giveaways and a showcase of the art submissions to our Canada 150 contest. 
Volunteers are needed to help with various tasks including event set-up, handing out promotional materials, running art activities, assisting Linkages staff etc.
Where:  Downtown - CORE Shopping Centre (2nd level) 
When:  Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 10:00am - 3:00pm (shifts available for a minimum of 2 hour per shift). Snacks and drinks will be provided!

Lunch Meal Service at Calgary Drop-In Centre  
Assist in the kitchen with plating meals and serve the plates to clients at Drop-In Center's dining room

LinkAges East Village- Stampede Parade
Accompany seniors needing help to walk to the parade (approx. 4 blocks) by either pushing a wheelchair, carrying lawn chairs or offering an arm for stability. At the parade, volunteers will visit with seniors and enjoy parade together.
Where: East Village (volunteers to meet at green space between Murdoch Manor and King Tower)
When: Friday, July 7, 2017 from 8am - noon

LinkAges Beltline- Ice Cream Social and Music Bingo
Help to serve ice cream and toppings to senior residents and then visit while enjoying the ice cream and playing games.
Where:  Grace Manor (1506 9th street SW)
When: Tuesday, July 11, 2017 from 2pm - 3.30pm

LinkAges East Village - Bands in the Pavilion
Visiting with seniors at the "Band in the Pavilion" event organized by the East Village Neighborhood Association. This event is a mix of musical performances. It is hoped that this event will help build confidence of the seniors to go out in the community and enjoy free events
Where: "The Pavilion" - corner of 6th Avenue and 4th Street SE (volunteers to meet at the bus stop beside Murdoch Manor and walk the seniors 1.5 city blocks to the Pavilion)
When: Saturday, July 29, 2017 - afternoon hours

Calgary Public Library
The Students Affairs Office of Bow Valley College is connecting our students with one of our community partners - The Calgary Public Library to be part of helping our Calgary community thrive through volunteering. The Calgary Public Library offers lots of volunteer opportunities for adults to share their skills and passion, helping Calgary's youngest citizens build skills, delivering materials to seniors and helping patrons explore computer technology and more.

Lougheed House - Historic Interpreter Volunteers
Interpreters tell stories about the house that are most meaningful to them, leading guests on tours, often in costume.
Skills Required:
 -   Public Speaking
 -   Historical Research
 -   Interacting with people

LMC—Diabetes & Endocrinology
Volunteer activities include:
 -   Placing calls to remind patients of their appointments.
 -   Putting together handout folders for diabetes education classes. 
 -   Tracking class attendance. 
 -   Creating displays and handouts on various diabetes related topics. 
 -   Other activities as needed.

Immigrant Services Calgary Opportunities:

Facilitators for Fun 4 All (Parent and Tot Program - ages 2 & up).
Fun sessions for parent and tot to strengthen their bond while practicing the children's fine and gross motor skills. Sessions include crafts, storytelling, dancing and free play.
Volunteer Facilitators' responsibilities:
-   Organize activities for the day and guide the children
-   Create fun experience for the children
Skills required:
-   Ability to adapt to language barriers of new immigrant parents and children
-   Experience in working with children; Early Learning and child care; child studies is an asset; valid police check needed
Date & Time: Thursdays from 4.30pm - 5.30pm
